Excuse me? I joined the Express LONG before Carrie ever came around. My bad, when she came around and someone created a Carrie thread here I thought I'd join in the discussion. When there are members here posting negative posts about her, I think I have a right to post my opinion as well. I know I don't join in on the Kelly convo as excessively as some members-but some of those topics just don't really interest me. When a topic does interest me (and the thread isn't already 10 pages long) I will give my input. Sorry I didn't know there were rules about posting in threads not in the KC section.

Quote: Then you must have missed the hundreds of admins post on this and other threads, that this forum is for ACTIVE members to discuss other artists. You have been called on numerous occasions in regards with your immediate need to pop in and defend Carrie and of course you just HAVE to jump in to agree with a person who CLEARLY joined this board simply to post about Carrie because that topic is far more interesting then any threads on the main forum right? You had so much input to add to the conversation. Give me a break. This is your last warning. You've been given enough passes with this stuff. Quit the Defender of all things Carrie act on this board.

lol... the recent discussion of her new single seems to be going in circles. From how some don't really like it because it "sounds the same as her debut album" to "that's how most country artists" are and back again.
the song is a grower on me and i'm digging it more and more... and while i'm 95% sure i may buy her album, this time it'll be more based on how much i like the songs rather than me being a fan of hers. |

Re: Carrie Underwood Discussion Thread, Part 2
sorry but someone joining just to rebutt my opinion is hysterical and even better that it's fannypackwearer. As for Carrie not wanting to sing rock, if that's the case perhaps someone can explain to me her covers of G&R and that other song, which are decidedly ROCK and quite confounding to reviewers who see her show. IMO Carrie isn't even close to being what I consider "country" because she tries too hard to straddle the fence between Pop and Country. Not that you have to choose, just be honest and say I like both and stop flying the country flag so high when it's clear that the music isn't country at it's core. Even So Small sounds more Pop than country! |

Just my 2 cents
Just because an artist likes music of other genre's doesn't mean that is what they really want to do - or more importantly what they CAN do it well enough to make money doing it. For instance - just because a singer might really enjoy opera doesn't mean that they really secretly want to be an opera singer. And again, more importantly, that they CAN sing opera (especially well enough to make money doing it). I think Carrie likes these others genre's of music but IMO country is where she is best suited. The POP covers she does all have a bit of country twang to them (it's ok - that's NOT a slam so retract the claws CareBears). IMO if songs like SCOM were 'critiqued' on their own merit, and not on a scale of "OMG that's COUNTRY Carrie Underwood singing that" it would just be OK. I am well aware of what Vince Neil said - and I agree. She does do a good job. But could she record that song and release it to Rock radio and become the next big rockstar? Or even make it to the top 10 on POP with it or a song like it? I don't think so. But again, JMO. Alot of singers like to dabble in other genre's - very few can pull it off to the degree that you could see them switching to that genre easily. Just because they sing it in concert doesn't mean that is where their heart lies or that a change of genre is imminent. And Carrie's music to me is definitely country. Maybe near the top part of the scale that seperates country from pop but it's definitely country (especially the preachy songs she sings - Wasted, Jesus Take the Wheel, So Small). BHC, imo, was a country song that had POP appeal - mostly because of how funny the song was and not so much the beat or the singer sounding POP. That song was a song that was destined for crossover based on the song alone (ala Redneck Woman a couple summers before that - there's no way Gretchen is POP/Country IMO). Carrie is definitely not your traditionalist country (like Martina, Trisha, Dolly, etc) but she still falls well within the scale of what passes for Country music in the year 2007. |

Quote: Hmmm, I don't hear POP at all with So Small. Maybe a little AC? If Inside Your Heaven and Jesus Take the Wheel had a baby, it would be So Small. So Small is your typical smaltzy country/AC ballad - Dripping with sugar and spice and preaching the message. It's the type of song that people who hate Country/AC would use to mock and justify why they can't stand that kind of music.Talk of mountains and rainy days and letting the sun shine in and faith and rivers and ... well you get the picture haha Songs like So Small are the reason I can only listen to country music radio for about an hour to an hour and a half. I prefer my country a little more fun - or less, um, barftastic if it is going to be a ballad. Seriously - this could have easily have been an AI coronation song. All that's missing is talking about riding the rainbow to your dreams and finding the pot of gold. Anywho, IMO if So Small had been on Some Hearts it would never have made the cut to be a single and it would have been one of the weakest tracks on the cd. Country is natorious for playing it safe with first singles so I have no doubt that Carrie has atleast one or two better songs on the upcoming cd. Listener feedback is just now coming in on the song (it was on ratethemusic for the first time August 10th). It failed to chart in the top 10 for Ratethemusic. There are stations that are dropping spins from last week to this week (and it's only been out like a week and a half or so). It could turn around (maybe it's a grower) but I personally think country radio jumped all over it because it's Carrie and are now finding out that alot of listeners are on the fence -or flat out don't like the song. In so many ways it's like Never Again - starting out with a huge bullet and rocketing up the charts to around #20 and then the bullet slowly falling. The good thing for Carrie is that it takes about half the spins of POP radio to make it to #1 on Country. By the time all the feedback comes in, it may be in the top 10. AND country tends to keep it's songs around forever (seriously - a 6 to 7 month trek to it's peak isn't abnormal on country) and most songs tend to lose their bullet at some point and then come back strong so if this song IS a grower it will have plenty of time to grow (unlike the chance Never Again never got! boo! hiss!). Anywho, sorry, didn't really mean to 'compare' Kelly and Carrie but it's the best example songwise I could come up with. I personally don't like the song at all - and I'd be willing to put money on the fact that if it wasn't Carrie's name attached to it, the song would be wallowing alot further down the chart - and would have a hard time hitting the top 15. The song itself, IMO, just isn't very good. And, well, to be honest I'm not much a fan of Carrie's voice on it either (too much glorynoting at the end and she is in froggy voice for a lot of the song). She's capable of better IMO. MUCH better. I do think that the cd will have some much better songs to offer. Like I said, I think it's just typical country playing it safe with the first single. |

Quote: Well I guess I just see it differently. Not that I doubt Carrie's love of country music, cuz I don't. But the fact that she claims to so closely identify WITH country music but only has named five country songs on her playlist is IMO pretty telling. I think IF she thought she had a chance in hell of succeeding she'd skip herself right over to full on Pop/Rock. I don't think it would work and I think she knows that because for as much as people say Carrie's a good singer IMO her voice is very thin at times and only sounds fuller when accompanied by her fantastic back-up singer. I said So Small was more Pop because of the tempo of the song...the soft verses following by the booming chorus, something that isn't very common in country as much as in Pop right now. It's like a play right out of POP 101. The only thing that makes this sound remotely country is Carrie's twang. |

oh snap! the mods are on it!
i agree. i wish she would GROW with this record. we could be surprised maybe the rest of her album will be better? i really liked carrie on AI... (ding) it just dawned on me... my problem w/ her is she is NOT kelly. she has a nice voice, but that's it... there is nothing to her... no stage prescence, no soul, no emotion, no personality... just a nice country voice... carrie is a puppet & can only make this music for so long before she is not as popular & yesterdays news.... every female country singer has there moment in the light... very few can reinvent themselves & stay the course... hers, too, will soon fade if she does not make changes... kelly will be around FAR longer. i was really rooting for carrie, hoping she would have REAL staying power... i'm disappointed |

I'm not a carrie fan but I like her music a lot, I can't help it. I didn't watch american idol until season 6, but I've seen on youtube her performances and I think she's good, but not great. I don't think she can sing EVERY kind of music. She's not kelly, that's for sure. I think So small has a lot of pop in it, I can't really compare it with other country songs because i don't live in the US so I only know a couple of songs but for what i've listened it's not the classical country. It's pop country. And she seems happy to me singing that. Carrie is a common person so I think she likes more than one music genre, like kelly, but she feels happy singing just country. Maybe in a couple of years she tries other stuff. It might be boring singing always the same things. (because i'm sure this new record will be Some Hearts 2)
So small will do great because it's carrie underwood, not because the song is good. And she'll sell a lot of records but not like some hearts. By the third single peolple will be tired of listening to the same thing over and over. And i agree with Un4gitible that So small could by an AI coronation song, it's so similar to Inside your heaven. That's part of the reason i think it'll be a hit (even though i don't want to )Just wanted to share my opinion. I hope i didn't offend anybody. |

I'm no Carrie fan, but I think it's kind of unfair to pigeonhole her into Country. She seems to like all sorts of music. Saying that she claims to be so Country and isn't reminds me of the people who say the same thing about Kelly and rock. When we know Kelly never claims to be Metallica. Has Carrie ever claimed to be hardcore Country?

i havent really read what has been going on here but I thought I would share a new video that is going around. Its Carrie singing "Kickstart My Heart" with Motley Crue front-man Vince Neil in Nashville:
youtube.com/watch?v=5S6nLXcfi9I some pics here: www.carrieunderwoodonline...cat183.htm And jmo on her new single, is that while I didn't really care for it the 1st time i heard it, it is starting to grow on me. I will buy her album no matter what, but I hope the other songs are better...lol |

Re: Carrie Underwood Discussion Thread, Part 2
Quote: I'm not bashing Carrie for having a diverse taste in music, hell her taste in music is much closer to my own than Kelly's in fact. But YES Carrie has said that the ONLY style of music she wants to sing is in fact country. Her whole "wooo I love country" schtick when she won the BNA Grammy almost made me hurl my cookies. MY Opinion is that IF Carrie were more secure in her talent and IF she believed she could make the transition and have the same level of success she's found in country she would actually TRY different genres such as pure pop or even pop/rock because she LIKES that music as evidenced by her play list and her continuing to cover such bands as G&R, Poision, getting on stage with Vince Neil, going to a My Chemical Romance concert, etc etc. I don't think there is anything wrong with Carrie sticking to country if that's where she feels most secure, I guess I just wish she believed in herself a lil more and were willing to risk coming off her AI pedestal and expanding herself artistically. |
