UNCONVENTIONAL IDOL OWNS ZOOTOPIA

WITH America burning up with "American Idol" fever, in a delirium over whether angelic Kris or devilish Adam will be declared the winner, the TV talent show's best discovery remains its first -- Kelly Clarkson.

Clarkson proved it in every song of her abbreviated set during radio station Z100's Zootopia Saturday at the Meadowlands' Izod Center. She wasn't the headliner . . . that honor belonged to the reanimated Black Eyed Peas. She wasn't the most sensual, seductive performer -- hip-pop singer Ciara brought sexy back. And rapper Flo Rida made the house churn to his nimble tongue rhymes.

Yet Clarkson owned Zootopia. Every song she sang -- even the slo-flo ballad -- was a vessel into which she totally poured herself. In a trick few female singers ever learn, her voice was commanding without syrup or bombast. Think of the way Janis Joplin sang "Piece of My Heart."

Clarkson achieved that same passion-in-every-note quality. In the seven years since she was crowned Idol's queen, I've seen her in clubs, as a warm-up act, as a guest soloist and as a headliner; Zootopia '09 was her zenith.

She opened with her time-tested hit "Since U Been Gone," throwing her self into the tune's heartbreak, anger and ultimate declaration of independence. Like Joplin, Clarkson tests pop culture's beauty standards, but with her near-perfect yet gritty vocals and her absolute passion for the songs, one couldn't help but be drawn to her.

She did that again with "Walk Away" and with the ballad "Already Gone." Clarkson continues to move away from the expected vocal vehicles and is making some interesting moves toward a harder metal sound for which she's well-suited.
