I figured we could revive this thread, as opposed to have millions of threads for different movies.
My pick of the week (which most of you probably have never heard of haha)
Ben X
Movie Title: Ben X
Original/Remake: Original (It won the Public's Choice Award and the America's Grand Prize at the latest Montreal International Film Festival)
Year: 2007-2008
Actors/Actresses: Laura Verlinden, Greg Timmermans
Plot: Ben is different. Above-average intelligent, but irrevocably socially challenged - to the point of autism. As an autistic boy trying to survive the normalcy - and cruel bullying - of regular high school, his life is a universe to itself. A universe very few can enter. His only comfort zone is the online game he masters - and the girl, Scarlite, who has been playing the game with him for over a year but whom he has never met. When the harsh reality becomes his own daily hell, Ben devises a plan that can be summed up in one word: Endgame. Just as Scarlite enters his real universe...
What did you like about it? It was so beautifully done. Deeply moving, and the performances were phenomenal - especially Laura Verlinden, whom I had never seen in a movie before but who blew me away. The simplicity of the bond between Ben and Scarlite makes for some of the most heartfelt scenes I have seen in movies lately. It's just beautiful. And sad. I cried. You just want to wrap your arms around Ben for most of the movie...And you just hope and pray that every Ben out there has a Scarlite...
What did you not like about it? Absolutely nothing.
Your overall personal rating: (Out of 5 Stars ) 5/5 It is a brilliant film.
Warning: It is subtitled. I know it can be a turn-off for many, especially those who prefer very mainstream films, but if you don't mind foreign movies, this is truly a must-see. One of the best films I've seen recently.
