Depression era audiences loved her movies like Born to Dance, Rosalie and teaming with legend Fred Astaire in probably the greatest tap sequence in movie history in Broadway Melody of 1940. Astaire himself admitted that he was intimidated by Eleanor's prowess. Like Kelly it wasn't just her incredible stamina and skill that made her great. It was also that she clearly loved dancing. Doing these jawdropping routines she never lost that dazzling smile. She just radiated joy in what she was doing. I get that same thrill and feeling of amazement when I watch Kelly sing. Powell combined ballet like grace to tapdancing the way Kelly operatic vocals to pop and contemporary. They both elevated the form to art IMO. She had power but she could float in her movements like Kelly could be so soft as a feather singing. Like Kelly she was sexy and sweet at the same time, down to earth and Heavensent at once.
