It's kind of funny to see that last week the Incredible Hulk was the number one movie. Five years ago tomorrow, the first Hulk
movie directed by Ang Lee came out and was a disappointment. That same day another movie premiered. One that was an even bigger disaster A movie Kelly fans
were both anticipating and dreading. We had no allusions beforehand that a movie starring two people who never acted before, and were only famous for being the
top two of a talent show would be the greatest movie. We all hoped it would be at least fun and not a total embarssment. No such luck. Even the opening credits
were bad! It's like the makers of the movie took everything we love about Kelly: her down to earth personality, her girl next door charm, her cuteness, her
sense of humor, her sense of fun, humility and her cheerful spirit. Let's take all that out and leave just a body and a voice. If they had
at least let Kelly and Justin be themselves it would be watchable. What's the point of having two people who were on a reality show presumably for the way
they are and have them be different? Instead they were playing people Kelly and Justin said in interviews that they weren't playing themselves and that
would have been fine except their characters' names were Justin and Kelly! And they were both from their respective hometowns! We knew It I can't
watch that movie on DVD without the commentary of the real Kelly and Justin talking over their lifeless counterparts.
Of course the critics were merciless. They called it the worst movie ever made. Kelly was nominated for a Razzie and she only lost because "Gigli"
with Jennifer Lopez came out the same year. People were saying she was done. That her fifteen minutes of fame were over and she would be back to waiting
tables. It was a real bad time for Kelly and her fans. Kelly persevered though. I think in the big picture it was good for Kelly that the movie bombed. If it
had been remotely successful, they might have forced her to be in more cheesy movies like Elvis. I think the film's failure forced her to move away from
farther from American Idol and that image and fight for legitimacy in the music industry. To work harder and focus to make her second album a commercial
success. To "break away"(pun intended) and prove herself. Now we and Kelly can look back on that movie and laugh it off as a mistake. A mistake all
big stars make and regret.
Unfortunately the one who suffered the most from the debacle was Justin. Poor, poor Justin. He didn't deserve the crap he had to endure. He was hit hard
and has been trying to recover. He's got a gig on TV Guide channel but is struggling with being a punchline.
