Jason Bernard of Flatwoods knew he was getting a rare treat as he listened to a few bars of his favorite song by his favorite artist.

In fact, country superstar Taylor Swift told him that she doesn't sing for everyone over the phone. For him, however, she made an exception.

The private cellular concert was part of a surprise phone call last Thursday between Swift and Bernard, who is living with a terminal illness.

Bernard, 19, receives assistance from Guardian Hospice Care. Shannon Henry is one of the Guardian nurses who is helping take care of Bernard.

Being in hospice care is about giving the patients what they need or want, and Henry does whatever she can to help, she said.

"It's about maximizing their quality of life," Henry said.

So when she was watching music videos with Bernard one day, Swift became the topic of conversation.

"I told them that she was my favorite artist," Bernard said. "She makes good love songs."

The fact that he finds Swift attractive didn't hurt either, he said.

Henry made a mental note of this, she said. She got in touch soon after the conversation with a woman she knew as Melanie at Cenla Broadcasting in Alexandria.

Henry asked her for help in contacting Swift and she make a phone call to Bernard. Within 36 hours, Henry was heading away from Bernard's home when her cell phone rang.

It was one of Swift's assistants.

"I was impressed how fast they called us back," Henry said.

She turned the car around and began phoning her coworkers to let them know the good news, Henry said. After another hour, Swift called and chatted on speaker phone with Bernard.

"I was nervous," Bernard said.

They talked about the video shoot Swift was doing with Kelli Pickler and her leaving soon to travel overseas.

Swift asked Bernard about the things he enjoyed, such as what he likes to watch on television. He also told her his favorite song by her was "Our Song," of which she then sang a portion.

"When she started singing, he really got into it," Henry said.

There were other people who listened to the phone call and shot video with their cameras to commemorate the moment.

"I'm just glad they did this for him," said Barbie Martin, who also helps to care for Bernard.

News of the 5- to 10-minute phone call spread far beyond the small circle of people there to witness it after Swift mentioned in a radio interview she had just spoken with a young man named Jason in Louisiana, Martin said.

"I'll never forget it," Bernard said.
