Danielle_Jane14: Kelly Clarkson on MTV Hits Tuesday, November 10th, 2009 9:00am to 10:00am - 10 tracks from the American Idol winner.

I was already a fan of Kelly Clarkson's music, but it was her taste in shoes that really won me over! When Kelly and I hosted a self-esteem workshop together, she chose to wear Uggs over mile-high Jimmy Choos. In that moment, comfort replaced cool, and I learned that there's a huge difference between the real girl and her polished celebrity image.
In pictures, famous people look perfect. It's a bummer to compare ourselves with those images and realize all the ways we'll never look like that. But it's important to know that nearly every person on a billboard, a CD, or a book cover has likely been retouched. Flyaway hair, zits, and even tummy rolls can be erased from an image in seconds.
That day we met, Kelly spoke candidly about the retouching that's done on her own pics. But she's not upset by it; instead she told me that she looks at these glossy airbrushed images as "pretty pictures," not as a representation of who she really is.
Kelly made me realize that it's okay to want to look like your favorite superstar. Fantasies keep us creative, striving, and dreaming. But what if, like Kelly, we saw those photos for what they really are - as works of art or as beautiful glamour shots - but not reality? And what if instead of trying to achieve the type of perfection that requires hours of professional primping and photo retouching, we vowed to embrace what's authentic and real about ourselves? Because, as Kelly told me that day, "When you focus on being happy with who you are, life gets a whole lot easier."
THIS MONTH'S GOAL:
I VOW TO: appreciate a pretty pic without comparing myself with it.
SO I WILL: check out what really goes into the photos I see at facebook.com/doveselfesteemfund. The next time I get swept up, I'll take a few seconds to remember that it's just a fantasy.
