Here are the questions: 1. Where are you from and what's your accent? 2. Do you always use the same accent? Or is it different in for example formal situations? 3. Has the way you pronounce your accent changed at all in the course of your life? Why (not)? 4. Do you consider BBC English (The Queen's English) as the accent with the highest social status? Why (not)? I will be grateful for any help you can provide, Marleen

I would say I have an Aussie accent, but due to a lot of traveling, it isn't as thick as the regular Aussie accent. 2. Yes, always use the same accent weather just a casual or formal situation. 3. I think it has changed due to lots of world travels... I'm currently living and working in the USA and when Australian or British tourists come through they are quick to tell me I've lost my Australian accent and I'm picking up the American accent, however, when American tourists come to my window, they are also quick to tell me how much they love my Aussie accent. Confusing, I know. I still pronounce words the way we do back in Australia, just without the thick Aussie accent I guess shrugs 4. I have to head out right now but will be back to answer it!

My main accent is English, mine isn't a regional accent like from Devon or Manchester etc. Mine doesn't have a "twang" to it. It's just plain talking really lol. I can also do an Australian accent extremely well. And some other English accents. Confused much? haha To sum it up, it's English 2. I always use the same accent but for fun I use to above accents when I wanna much about lol. 3. I believe mine's always been the same. I sometimes slip into a bit of devonshire because I've lived around that all my life but I stick to just English accent really. 4. I think it is because the Queen is the top of the hierarchy and is believed to be most respected. If you talk like her then people do think that you are of a higher social status so I believe it is Hope this helps.

Yes, the way I speak in terms of vocabulary, tone etc may change, but not the accent itself. 3. The only time it changes is if I am trying to play it up when I am overseas My parents, in particular my father thinks my accent isn't as strong when I spend long periods of time overseas, and I tend to pick up a hint of an American accent after travelling through there, but it goes after a few weeks back home. 4. No, I just think it sounds stuck up in most cases. It has to do with the person, not the accent, I have met many who spoke BBC english, but they didn't have particularly high social status, and vice versa, those that did but didn't speak like it. Therefore it is not an automatic association.

I use the same accent, which is just a bog standard English accent, however, it comes through on certain words, and the way I pronounce words is more lik how Americans pronounce them...for instance I say "grass" instead of "grarss" (I know there isn't another R in "grass" but that's how it sounds when most people say it 3. No I refuse to change out of principle....people may mock me for the way I speak, but I'm proud of it, because I don't sound like a pretentious B**tard....like some people 4. Do you consider BBC English (The Queen's English) as the accent with the highest social status? Why (not)? It is seen as that, because people mock me for not talking like it, however, I'm not going to change the way I talk just to sound like everyone else....in fact....I'm pronouncing words like they should be....I mean when you write the word "grass" do you write it with an extra R? No! So why on earth does it need one when you say the word out loud?

I use my same voice/accent, but may alternate my words depending on the environment. 3. Some yes. As a vocal major, my diction class taught me about the different dialects in the English language and how so many words can be pronounced differently. So I'd say it has improved. 4. Perhaps yes in the true sense of the word, (i mean obviously she is the head of the social ladder) but I don't think that it is the "official mark" for the language in which you gauge how an English speaker SHOULD speak

Although the Queen is at the top of the hierarchy and viewed as "first class", I don't think the BBC accent that she acquires is always associated with high social status. While in England last year I met many people who spoke BBC English but didn't necessarily carry the upper social status to go with it. On the contrary, I've met some people at the higher end of the social status ladder whom have very sloppy sounding accents. At the end of the day, it is just an accent, you either have it, or you don't and I don't think it depicts your class.

I grew up just outside Cardiff near the welsh valleys but where I'm from you either have the accent I had or the valley accent, which is very strong. 2. Mostly yes but I use a different tone of voice on the phone so people can understand me. 3. Yeah it has changed, when I was growing up I used a very prominant valley accent due to my parents/grandparents and family etc. When I went to school they were %!$+ hot on it and encouraged us to talk more clearly. The welsh accent is influenced by the language, we roll our R's and slur our words alot. We also used alot of welsh words in our english (they call it "wenglish" now) and I still do to this day, now that I live in England, I'm concious of the fact that if I talk normally nobody would be able to understand me. So I try to talk more clearly. 4. I woulden't regard it as of the higest social status because I think that's a bit silly, I know all too well that different things apart from social status influence the way you talk growing up. Usually in England this is the education system and the regional accents of England. I would regard the queens accent though as the poshest, and alot of people on the BBC and ITV networks here in the UK talk like this. It's neutral english. So everyone understands it.

I have a have an australian accent. Well, I'd hope so anyway. 2. I use my accent most of the time except when working, need to sound professional to a degree. My tone is the same but use different wording. 3. No, its still the same accent I've had all my life. Haven't been anywhere that could influence it. 4. I dont think its the highest accent. I suppose you could say it is formal to a degree but also old fashioned. I have an english friend who speaks it like that but I don't see her any different to anyone else I know. Boring answers I know but hope it helped

Where are you from and what's your accent? Warrington, England. My accent is a mix of a Manchester accent and a scouse (Liverpool) accent, easiest way to describe it to you. 2. Do you always use the same accent? Or is it different in for example formal situations? My accent changes a little when I slow down my speech, which is what tends to happen when I am in a formal situation. When I talk really fast my accent takes on more of a Liverpool twang but when I slow down I become more well pronounced and "proper" 3. Has the way you pronounce your accent changed at all in the course of your life? Why (not)? Yes a bit mainly because I spent 3 years living in West Yorkshire for university and also I spent 3 months in America to work, which all of my friends & family say changed my accent but I can't tell the difference. 4. Do you consider BBC English (The Queen's English) as the accent with the highest social status? Why (not)? Not really, just because I've grown up around people with so many accents and I know that the queen's english doesn't necessarily deem someone to be of a high social status in this day and age. I think as a child I thought it was but growing up I've met some people with some really "common" accents who are very well off and of a high social status.
