American Idol Announced

More than 15 million telephone votes bring Kelly Clarkson to victory over Justin Guarini
America has been looking for its "idol" for the past three months on summers biggest TV hit. Now, 10,000 hopeful contestants later, America has finally found her: Kelly Clarkson! How does it feel for the 20-year-old former waitress from Burleson, Texas to be named the first-ever American Idol? "I feel a little bit of everything anxious, excited ...," Kelly said.
A Winning Moment Like This
After being announced the winner at the end of the last episode, Wednesday night, Kelly held back tears as she sang "A Moment Like This," which was written especially for the show. Kelly's first single, a song called "Before Your Love," will be released on September 17. After releasing her single, Kelly will record a full album, which will be released on November 26.
The American Idol runner-up, 23-year-old big-haired Justin Guarini, appeared to be thrilled about Kelly's win. "Kelly Clarkson deserves it," the Doylestown, Pennsylvania native and former door-to-door salesman said. "I can't sing those songs nearly as good as she can."
The show's judges, singer Paula Abdul and producers Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell, agreed Kelly deserved to win. Even Simon, who is usually more critical than complimentary, always had kind words when it came to Kelly's performances.
A Huge Hit
More than 18.2 million people watched Tuesday's show as Kelly and Justin each sang three songs in their bids to be named American Idol. After the show, more than 15 million callers cast their votes by telephone. In just three months, more than 100 million votes were cast for contestants on the show, making America Idol the biggest television hit of the summer.
Even though American Idol has come to an end, you'll still be seeing and hearing a lot of Kelly! On September 11, she will perform the national anthem at the Lincoln Memorial as part of a televised tribute. As for the finalists, they will release an American Idol Greatest Hits album next month and tour the nation in October and November.
