LIVE REVIEW: Kelly Clarkson (Rod Laver Arena, Wednesday November 9)
*Non-Aussie terminology. Also some of the comments I dont agree with (namely SUBG), but all in all, its still a butt-kicking review.*
Kelly Clarkson has a lot of friends in this country. Not a bad effort for someone who has only released two albums. The Rod Laver Arena was chockers (*very full) with excitable fans who didnt hold back their obvious adoration for the worlds only true Idol. Perhaps one of the reasons behind her extraordinary success is the fact Australian audiences didnt see her win a talent show on TV; rather she has been flogged (*played a lot) the old fashioned way via the radio much like the old Mariahs and Anastasias before her.
Whatever the reason behind her winning way, the diminutive Texan displayed professionalism and a real sense of appreciation for her fans. She nattered (*chatted) away about her fears of bugs, boyfriends who have been beautiful disasters and a desire to always include Australia in her touring agenda (yeah, we wont hold our breath). And how refreshing to see an artist with such a large teen female following who isnt the size of a bread stick. While Kelly is obviously athletic and fit with a taunt midriff, this is a woman with a butt. God bless your cheeks Miss Clarkson.
Also to her credit, the concert clocked over in 75 minutes despite a resume a fraction the size of Madonnas. Kelly cleverly spread her hits Miss Independent receiving a suitable gutsy rendition; likewise Low and Breakaway (the nights closer). For Behind these Hazel Eyes Kelly came running on to the stage in a white dress like a barefoot banshee (*even I dont know what this means!). She did what she had to before leaving to change back into her casual gear, curious but effective. The only lackluster point of the concert was Since U Been Gone. On the radio this track blasts from the speakers. Although in a live setting it is still loud and proud, the expectation was that it would propel astronauts into space but it didnt.
That job was picked up by one of her lower key moments. Because of You, that brought the house down. Although it has only been released through radio and not available as a single to buy 99.9% of the audience sang along. Why, shucks, Kelly even stopped singing herself so we could show off. Yes, its been done a thousand times before but who cares? Like the Mexican wave, its a sure thing.
Kelly Clarkson is already at work on her third album. Judging by the preview of the soul rock of new cut Come Here, it looks as though Kelly aint going anywhere near the dumper anytime soon. Sometimes you just cant beat the original. Shane Cooper.
