'I've never dissed Duff'

KELLY Clarkson is just not the fighting type, so the 22-year-old Texan was caught off guard when some tongue-in-cheek quips about one of her pop peers, Hilary Duff, sparked a mini-feud.
Clarkson, the first American Idol winner, says she was laid low with the flu at the time of the so-called spat.
"I was sick, but when I got back and I heard, I was like, 'I don't even know what that is'," she says down the line from Germany.
It all started when Clarkson jokingly told a magazine: "I'm going to start a fight - me and Hilary Duff. Isn't she always in the news for being in fights with some other chick? (ie Lindsay Lohan)."
But Good Charlotte's Benji Marshall chose to defend Duff, the girlfriend of his twin brother, Joel, with a scathing attack on Clarkson on website blog. "It does make me laugh when someone like Kelly Clarkson disses someone like Hilary Duff,'cause let's not forget, Kelly, you were a contestant on a TV show - Hilary made herself," Marshall wrote.
Clarkson says she and Duff were definitely not at war. "It's all just a media thing," she says. "We're acquaintances. We don't have sleepovers,'cause we don't have time, but when we see each other at events we're cool."

While she's not into fisticuffs with her pop peers, she's had to come to terms with constant comparisons. Hilary Duff? She's heard it. Avril Lavigne? Yep. Christina Aguilera?
"That's too obvious. We're both white girls with big voices. Obviously, I'm different, that's why I don't have a problem with it."
Fame is a double-edged sword for Clarkson, whose song, Since You Been Gone, saved her from almost certain post-Idol obscurity.
Her first album, Thankful, was a moderate success, featuring Miss Independent and Low, but her second long-player, Breakaway, has been a runaway chart-topper.
The good thing is that the success of that song has enabled her to meet her rabid fans around the world. The bad part, she says, is there's never enough time to talk to them.
"It's good, however you look at it. Everyone's always everywhere I am," she says. "I don't mind talking, but I have a pretty tight schedule."
So tight, in fact, that as the singer hurtles through Europe on her world tour, she's lost track of exactly where she is.
"I'm in Germany, in Berlin and Cologne and ... oh wait, I'm in Cologne, then Berlin," she says. "Then it's London and Australia and New Zealand."
Credit must also go to Clarkson for being able to build on the momentum she'd created with SUBG. Her latest song, Because Of You, is already a radio fave and Clarkson's most personal song on Breakaway.
"It's about every family's unhealthy cycle that keeps repeating generation to generation," she says. "Kids see things that maybe they shouldn't, that affects them for the rest of their lives. It's about breaking that cycle."
Clarkson says she was "very happy" when her parents divorced.
"I was six. I could recognise when somebody was happy or not happy. It was very innocent and pure like that. Not complicated."
