Brisbane audience idolises Kelly

IT'S about time a pop princess blasted the roof off the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on the strength of her voice alone.
Texan Kelly Clarkson can not only sing, but she does it with a strength and passion almost unheard of in today's pop culture -- and without the gimmicks employed by lesser artists.
Tellingly, the 22-year-old took the stage last night with only her band for support.
The first winner of American Idol dressed in long black pants, a silver belt and a semi-transparent Aerosmith tank top designed to hint at, rather than flaunt, her curvaceous figure.
There was no continual cluster of backing singers, no team of background dancers -- instead what held the packed Entertainment Centre enthralled was pure, unadulterated Clarkson.
If any doubts remained as to the depth of the diva's vocal range, her decision to sing a segment a cappella proved her musical mettle.
Clarkson may have gained her big break through a much-copied television series, but it's no accident that of the Idol franchise, she is the only one to achieve global success.
Performing in her trademark bare feet, the pint-sized powerhouse again proved she is no slave to pop fashion -- earning her status as a bona fide rock chick in both sound and appearance.
It was her smash hit single Since U Been Gone, however, which proved Clarkson's turning point -- propelling the singer into the international limelight and away from the Idol stigma.
She has managed to amass a swag of hits including Breakaway, Because of You, Miss Independent and Behind These Hazel Eyes.
It's songs such as Come Here and The Trouble With Love Is, however, that prove her versatility and throw in a touch of blues.
Even Clarkson's choice of support act was a brave move: Rogue Traders, headed by Neighbours star Natalie Bassingthwaighte, are fast earning an enviable reputation in their own right with the hit single Voodoo Child. And they were a runaway success with the Brisbane crowd.
Clarkson has said she wants to succeed internationally and is determined to display the work ethic as well as the talent to do so.
Clarkson has raised the benchmark for all pop rock acts to follow.
Now all that's left to do is sit back and see who has the talent and passion to meet the challenge.
