Kelly: From A to Z

by Barbara Chabai
Here's the thing: we started out really excited about talking to Kelly Clarkson amidst her busy summer tour, but then, admittedly, grew a little apprehensive.
After all, she comes off so likeable, so genuine and as down-home comfortable as a pair of frayed cutoffs. What if the Kelly we knew turned out to be nothing but (gasp) an act? A contrived image engineered by some ivory tower music mogul? What if she was actually a demanding diva who commands silence from her entourage and exotic flowers in her dressing room, obsesses about calories and fusses over thread counts?
Whew.
Fortunately, Kelly is none of the above, and instead, everything we hoped she'd be and more sweet, sincere, funny and down to earth. The kind of girl we'd like to watch a good DVD, play Cranium and eat frozen cookie dough with. Take our word for it, Kelly Clarkson is 100 per cent authentic down to the letter.
A Advice: "The best advice my mom ever gave me was to take advice as advice. That's worked well because everyone has their two cents on what you should sing, how you should look and what you should say. Two heads are better than one, but at the end of the day, don't sacrifice or compromise yourself just to sell a CD."
B Business sense: "I've gotten more wise about everything. It's just like when you get any new job, you have to learn the ropes. I think now I'm wiser and a bit more gutsy."
C Chart position: "Breakaway" was number one on Billboard's AC chart for 11 weeks, the longest consecutive reign since Celine Dion did it in 2002.
D Diva behaviour: "I'm not usually like that. I have people around me that I have known since I was little. They just want things to stay as normal as possible for me and that's their job. If I say something that's, well, not quite diva-ish, but not what I'd normally say, they're like, "Uh, what are you doin'?"
E eBay, which auctioned off her used bottled water: "You know you're famous when they're selling your DNA! It's scary because there's some freakish people out there cloning things and they could be doing something weird "
F Fans: "They're so dedicated and loyal, it's ridiculous. I've never met a more loyal bunch of fans, not even for a sports team! They really like the music and love whenever I try something new. They allow me to spread my wings whenever I want."
G Gossip rag scrapbook: "I was in (the tabloids) so much from the show and it was all ridiculous. I've 'been' on steroids, I've 'been' married, I've 'been' pregnant, I've 'been' booed off an airplane. Who comes up with that? I've 'been' so many things and we keep them all."
H Him: "I'm a very spiritual person. God always filled the void and I'm happy because of it. He's always the one that never lets you down. He's just an answer for all and the reason why I'm here, the reason why I'm doing well."
I Influences: "My brother was into Metallica and Guns N' Roses and rap. My sister was the New Kids and pop, my dad was Aerosmith and my mom was Aretha and Patsy Cline. Everybody had their own 'thing' and (as the youngest) I think I was sort of feeding off of everybody."
J - Jagged Little Pill: "I think everyone's been influenced by that record. It's just everything you've always wanted to say at one point in your life, it's just that Alanis puts it so bluntly."
K Kreviazuk, Chantal and Raine Maida: "They were the first team that I sat down and wrote with. I was a little intimidated at first, but they were like, 'Relax, it's cool.' She writes like I do a very emotional writer."
L Love interest, and the fact that there's none in the picture: "I talk to people every now and then but that's all I can do, it's nothing ever serious. It can't be. I'm on tour for the next year or two. It sucks."
M Movies: "I love movies but I never get to go to the theatre anymore. I did like Kingdom of Heaven. Orlando Bloom looked like a man. I was so surprised! He's so small and very boyish, you know, but wow, he looked like a man. A man-man."
N Nemo, finding: Growing up, Kelly wanted to be a marine biologist!
O Obsessive Compulsive: "I have to have everything on even numbers. I'm not even kidding. It's weird, even in school playing volleyball, I'd have to bounce the ball a certain number of times. Now it's my hotel room numbers. I just can't help it."
P Perfect Man: "More like Chandler from Friends. I love funny guys. Yup, Chandler with a splash of Matthew McConaughey."
Q Qualities, her best. Inner: "I'm probably the most honest and trustworthy person on the planet. I'm always the girl in the group that everybody comes and talks to." Outer: "Actually, I thought it was a curse, but I've found that it's my J-Lo butt. It's just that I'm Greek so it's always going to be there. People like it, so whatever floats their boat."
R Real: "I hope that people see me as real. I always hate meeting people in the industry and you're not really meeting them you're meeting the brick wall in front of them. I never want to be that. I came into this business in a different way, so I don't think people see me as unattainable. I want people to feel like they can come up to me, say hi and look at me as normal."
S Smelly Songs, her music publishing company: "Since I was young, everybody always called me Smelly Kelly, or Belly or Jelly or anything that rhymed."
T Texas, which you can't take out of the girl: "Oh man, it's so true. I'm blunt and honest. I'm open with anyone. I don't care about daily diets and regiments. I eat my southern food: I love country-fried steak, mashed potatoes and green beans. I'm very Texas."
U U2 and Aerosmith: "I love both those bands. Their music reaches part of the human body like I think no other artists can (and) going to their concerts is like a spiritual experience. Plus, they've been around and are still around."
V Vocal cord care: "I'm classically trained, so I warm up at least 30, 45 minutes before each show. And I drink tons of water I must drink 20 bottles a day. But it's a problem when you're on stage and I'm like (whispering), "I gotta pee!"
W Webb, Michael, her first crush in third grade: "I can't remember what he looked like, but I remember that name: Michael Webb. He was a real guy's guy."
X XX chromosomes: "I've always been a tomboy. I do like dressing up now and then, and I love sundresses, they're cool. But mine are more (hippie) like Janis Joplin, not like pretty daisy dresses or anything. I've never been that 'girlie' I've always liked camping, hiking, sports and the outdoors."
Y "You, Because of," the new single and her favourite song on Breakaway: "I wrote 'Because of You' when I was 16. You know, you're sitting in your house in your small little town, writing these songs but never knowing if anything's going to happen with them. Here we are in the studio, and it's happening. It's just the coolest thing."
Z Zoo, the worst job she ever had: "Oh man, it was so hot. I had to be right by the monkeys and their poop smelled. The whole zoo smelled."
THIS KELLY GIRL AIN'T NO TEMP!
