Song Celebration: Irvine |
Lead | |

Okay, so I totally ripped this idea from thankful4kelly and her "song of the moment" threads from the Breakaway era. I think we could use it, though. It's just another one of my dorky ways to try and bring some positive light back into the board.
So please post your opinion of this (wonderful) song! |

I love this song. I can relate to it 150%. I love the questioning tone in which kelly sings in this song, she really wanted the answers to those questions. And the sorrow. It's something beautiful thats one of a kind, honestly.

I love the way Kelly sings it, she hasnt ever sung a song like this before. She makes me want to cry.

Quote: another thing... i'm glad kelly chose to share with us her experience, she didn't have to... it was the lowest point in her life & she turned it into a song for her album .. talk about dealing with your problems. this song proves to me what an incredible person she really is THANKS AGAIN FOR THIS THREAD.. IT WAS VERY MUCH NEEDED! |

I looooove this song but it's so sad. It's pretty amazing to listen to though cause her voice is so raw, it's like a voice we haven't really heard from her before... but at the same time it's so vocally perfect.

This is a great idea for a thread (thanks to thankful4kelly as well)
Irvine is one of the most endearing songs on the album for me. It's raw and oh so honest, and I relate to it so much. I think i've possibly asked those same questions a time or two. Why is life so hard? Does God cry with us when we feel this way? Good questions. The heartbreak and defeat in Kellys voice is very sad, but when you're at that low point in life, that's how it is. Hearing her voice sing this song, I hear my own heart talking to God. Now I want to hear the post-Irvine story from Kelly. I want her to write about what happened/how she felt after she got through this rough patch, to round it all out. Because we know she didn't stay down and out - she's an overcomer! (wow, my post is cheesy) |

Admittedly it's a strange choice for a "favorite" but it's my favorite song on the CD. Musically, it's an amazing style....so stripped down, just Kelly and a guitar, and I'd love to see her explore this side of her musical personality more in the future. Lyrically....without getting too personal let's just say there was a stretch of my life where this song would have applied nearly every day....so it makes me feel like yeah, someone else has been there and knows how that gets, so you're not alone. And if I ever have the chance to meet Kelly again I fully intend to thank her for writing this song.
Even though I think I remember an interview where Kelly said she'd only sung it once and never wanted to again (correct me if I'm wrong)....to me it's special. |

This song is an absolute gem for all sorts of reasons.
I absolutely love the simplicity of a haunting voice and an acoustic guitar. The way the vocals seem to hang in the air lets the song speak for itself and of course the lyrics themself are heartbreakingly beautiful. It is easy to be transported to another place completely when listening................ jeez..wow..........speaking of cheesy |

The first time I listened to this I was completely surprised, but in a good way, by how she sung this. When I first read about the topic of the song (I think it was in the Ann Power's article), I was expecting a huge power ballad. But, now that I think about it, her stripped down, quiet, reflective vocals works much better, especially since she described it as a prayer. I think, considering the topic, if it had been a power ballad it would have been too melodramatic, I really can't imagine this song being sung in another way.
And the lyrics are brilliant. This song along with Chivas, Sober and Maybe are, IMO, the best lyrically on MD. I know that she's stated that she doesn't really want to sing this live, since it's such a personal song for her, but I would really love to hear her sing this in concert. |

This song is unbelievable. It's hard not to feel the raw-ness of her feelings and emotions with this song. She almost invites the listener to feel her pain with her... it's hard not to relate in some shape or form.
Her voice is haunting, scary almost, yet the song is beautiful. "Irvine" gets my vote as her best song to date. |

Quote: CenTxGrendel i remember Kelly saying (have no clue what interview thou), your right for Kelly to have only ever sung this song once is VERY special. Even thou i want to hear this song live in a way im a bit happy she wont sing it again - for 1 i wouldnt want kelly to go back to place again - and B every time you hear a song over and over again it loses something special. Maybe Kelly will perform this a few years done the line. |
