Even though Carrie's voice and this song just aren't my cup of tea, I still think it will go to #1. Country fans seem to lurve Carrie and young girls/women that are Pop fans seem to love her too. I think for the Pop girls it's a combination of Carrie's beauty and a decent voice that does it for her and I don't see that changing for quite some time. So she has the eyes and the ears of fans of two different genres. I think whatever she puts out at this point in time is going to be huge.

you know...I love Carrie...but I also felt like she was reaching for some of the notes...I even turned to my roommate and said "Wow, that's pretty high for her."
As for the song, it's ok...nothing groundbreaking though it's very rare that anything country would be groundbreaking (except maybe for the Dixie chicks) nothing against country as I love it...but that's how I think about it...they mostly sound the same...some are WAY country (miranda Lambert) and some are pop/country (Carrie underwood) nothing new there. The song will probably do well as Carrie is hot at the moment which is probably why they decided to release another album so soon after the success of "Before he Cheats"...they want to strike while the iron is hot and I don't blame them...she's got a great little career right now...she's been everywhere...so I don't doubt she'll keep doing whatever they want her to do. I just hope she doesn't get too burned out...and learns to say "no" to things every once in a while. I love Carrie and I do want her to grow as an ARTIST...country or not...I hope she does just that. Much luck and love to her. |

It's a lame song, but it will most likely go to #1. No offense to country fans, but talent isn't always a necessity to have a career in that genre. Look at Bucky and Josh Gracin (sorry, Penny!). I believe Carrie has talent, and Before He Cheats is a great song, but the majority of her music is just made to fill some sort of pretty white girl quota in country music. It makes no difference what she sings at this point.

I don't think the song is anything different or special, but I did notice that Carrie developed more power and I noticed some nuances and grit and maturity to her vocals.
My opinion of Carrie's songs tho' is that I cannot say that I see them as distinctively Carrie's. An example... The first time I heard BHC on the radio, I thought it was just okay. Then one day, we went to a karaoke bar, and this girl who was sharing the dj duties sang it in a way that somehow made me pay attention. But of course I know too that it's also all a matter of preference, so no offense to Carrie fans.

I listened to So Small today, and honestly.. as a big Carrie fan, I am not impressed. IMO it's not on par with her other singles (and even other SH songs that were not singles). I'm sure it'll grow on me, but right now I'm very lukewarm about it.

I actually kind of like the new song. It will need to grow on me, though. And I'm 100% positive that it will reach #1.

Re: Carrie Underwood Discussion Thread, Part 2 | ||

The song will go to top 5 on country simply because Carrie's singing it. The song itself - well, my first thought (even though Shannon already said it) was Idol Coronation Song. Talking about light shining through, a rainy day, Climbing mountains, rivers, etc. Even the 'cadence' of the song (slow and boring at the beginning and then building to show off glory notes) screams Idol Coronation. It's kind of funny if you look at the lyrics (and cadence) of the song Inside Your Heaven and compare them to So Small - they are like sister songs!
Quote: Haha, Abs - can't that be said of all genre's, though. Um, hello, Avril Lavigne? Fall Out Boys? Ashlee Simpson? Justin Timberlake? Rihanna? Amy Winehouse? Need I go on? heh I wouldn't call any of them necessarily great voices, and for a couple of them, great songs is all they have going for them, (JMO), so I think talent is subjective? Sometimes good songs are all it takes - lets face it, Rascal Flatts doesn't have the most pleasing to the ear voices but their songs? Yeah, some of the best in country music - scratch that, music, period, IMO. I think the 'good' or 'talent' criteria varies from genre to genre and singers that make it in POP, wouldn't stand a chance in country - and vice versa. |

Ok, sorry Carrie fans but - this made me laugh (and says my thoughts on So Small so much better than I ever could)
popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/...l#comments Snap Judgment: Carrie Underwood's 'So Small' Aug 1, 2007, 12:10 PM | by Michael Slezak Categories: American Idol, Music Okay, I've never been the world's biggest Carrie Underwood fan. I railed against her throughout American Idol's fourth season mainly because I didn't think robots belonged in the competition and her first post-Idol single, "Jesus Take the Wheel," was the kind of dreary pabulum that only reinforced my negative view. But then something surprising happened. Late last year, I succumbed to the saucy charms of Underwood's ubiquitous crossover hit "Before He Cheats." And during the Grammy Awards in February, her covers of "Desperado" and "San Antonio Rose" got me wondering: Could I have been wrong about her all along? Sad to say, but based on "So Small," the lead single from Underwood's upcoming sophomore set, it looks like the answer is a resounding "No." (Click here to check it out at AOL Music.) Bad enough that the track is delivered in a deafening screech, but the lyrics (co-written by Underwood herself) make "This Is My Now" sound poetic. "Let the light shine through"? "Love is all that matters"? "Better make it count"? "Sometimes that mountain you've been climbing is just a grain of sand"? Oh hell no, Carrie. This can only be handled one way: In the form of a lyrical response set to the tune of "Jesus Take the Wheel." She was writin' song lyrics on her way to Oklahoma On her tour bus for ten days Her laptop bookmark set to good ole' Google For a search of handy clichés Fifty miles to go and she was searchin' for A word that rhymed with "pink" What about "kitchen sink"? She had a lot on her mind, she was really concentratin' She was scribblin' way too fast Before she knew it she'd slipped into a sea of jank bombast Her career flashed before her eyes She didn't even have time to cry She was so scared, she threw her notebook in the air Jesus take the pen! Take it from her hand! 'Cause writing's really not her thing Just let it go Give Diane Warren a chance Save her from a sophomore slump Jesus take the pen |

Quote: Yeah, I heard it again driving home and that's exactly what I was thinking. EW--how ironic. She's not the lead writer, but considering its going to be made a big deal that she's got lots of writing credits on this cd, I can see that going for and against her. The DJ made a big DJ about pointing out that Carrie had written on the song with some big Nashville songwriters so it should be interesting to see the media responds to Carrie getting writting credits. |

well, now that I've heard it.....I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. It's a "countrified pop song", which is not my forte. And I don't think I've ever heard so many glory notes in a country song. I think they put way too much background vocal in it, I would have preferred Carrie singing by herself on a lot of those lines (a common musical complaint with me, honestly).
But I think it'll do well with radio, they seem to like that sort of stuff these days. I like Carrie somewhat....I'm just not a huge fan of pop country. It'll sell well to the Rascal Flatts audience. I'll have to hear more before I decide if I'm buying her next album or not. |

Ok, I think some of you are failing to realize how country music DOES not change-seriously, someone else said it already...if you listen to RF, Faith Hill, Tim, Kenny...a majority of their songs have the same feel to them. It's not like pop music where you can stay strictly pop, or go pop/rock, a more dance feel, punk feel, depressed lonely feel...and so on.
I think that yes, the lyrics are a bit cheesy, but not really Carrie's fault, since, near the end of the last thread someone was quick to point out that names get listed in order of amount on contribution on writing credits, right? It's an inspirational song about not worrying about the little things, that there's so much more to life. Sounds like a perfect country song to me. Just a sidenote-I've seen Josh Gracin live- he is indeed VERY talented. |

how is it not her fault, she can say, no i'm not singing this... but she chooses to do what she's told to do. whatever, she isn't an artist, she's just a good singer.

Quote: But Mel, how do you know she's just doing what she's told? Why should she say no to singing this, if it's the kind of music she likes? The lyrics may be cheesy but at the same time tons of people will probably love it, and it'll make a lot of people happy so is there really anything so bad about that? And I have to agree with Penny about the country thing. For every mediocre country artist, there's just as many or more mediocre pop stars (and some of them are insanely succesful, which definitely isn't the case with Bucky or Josh). On top of that I bet percentage wise a lot more country artists play their own instruments and actually write their own songs (and never lip synch...). |
