Season five "American Idol" contestant Chris Daughtry has signed with 19 Recordings/Arista, joining runner-up Katharine McPhee and winner Taylor Hicks on the label. Daughtry has already commenced work with "A-list collaborators," according to the label, which will release his debut album in late 2006. The artist, who is currently on the road with the American Idols Live tour, will also form a permanent band. Daughtry has already impacted the Billboard charts with his cover of Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive," which debuted at No. 16 on Billboard's Hot Digital Tracks survey and No. 43 on the Hot 100. I could see this coming - had to know they wouldn't let him get away even though they got burnt singing the #4 from season 1. It will be interesting to see how the 1, 2 and 4 do compared to the 1, 2 and 4 from season 1 - since that was the only other year they signed 3 finalists (that I can remember?). #3 seems like a bad spot to finish in though doesn't it? They NEVER get signed by 19/BMG affiliate. Anywho, I may think that Chris needs an ego check and that's he's arrogant but I do like his voice and his sound so I'm looking forward to hear what he comes out with. Hopefully it will be true to his style and not watered down too much

It IS great that he's with The Firm - and definitely will be a good thing if he gets signed with a record label. I just think it's odd that where the 'first choice' option by BMG has been used for 1, 2 and 4th place finishers at various times in the past, they usually skip the 3rd place one. K-Lo got signed by a different label outside the 'show option' (or whatever you want to call it lol) and did ok with her first cd and is ready to release another. The same could easily happen for Elliott I guess what I mean by 'bad' is that they have to work to get a label to sign them - they don't get the easy way out or whatnot of a guarenteed signing once the show ends. John - is it official yet for Elliott with The Firm? Last I saw they were wooing him but nothing had been signed. Like I said, if so - that's GREAT for him. The Firm has to be, hands down, the best management company out there right now.

His style is SO not suited to being a solo artist. Eventually, he is going to realize that he needs to be the frontman of a band. But by then it might be too late, and he'll be back at the Honda dealership. Then again, maybe Chris can break the mold and be successful in the rock or pop/rock genre as a solo artist. Or maybe he's going to sell out like Bo did.

And of course I immediately thought of Chris. Lol. I agree with Houster that he's better off in a band. Maybe Arista is hiring some guys and they're going to call it The Chris Daughtry Band or something?

Why couldn't 19/Arista sign his entire band? Maybe Simon Fuller is going to create a new reality show on FOX to find a band for Chris -- sort of a reverse "Rockstar."
