alright, chasechunt presented this
idea in a different thread, and i loved it so i thought i would start a new thread. i thought i'd give it a shot so other people noticed it and they
didn't have to find this idea in the "Hole played on US radio" thread.
chasechunt:
Ok guys. So. We should choose a song from MD we can agree upon contacting our local stations as Iowa Fan put it. It might take a while, but WE are the listeners. WE are the fans. WE should not let the label stop us from hearing our Kelly being played. Seeing as Hole was Clives choice anyhow.. maybe we should stick to that one?? And if it gets played across the country enough maybe he'd take notice. Its a longshot but come on... were the Kelly Clarkson Express. There are no fans for any artist out there right now like us. We have the most contacts, the most sources, we have a solid following on here. I know several stations around Flint/Detroit that would play the song just because I know alot of the people... including 2 program directors. So Im gonna give it a shot.
so i think people should post a list of radio stations to request to or something... like the idea??
thanks chasechunt!
here's a little perspective on radios from Kellys Biggest Iowa Fan:
Here's a little perspective from a radio guy.
Contrary to what you may think, radio can play whatever they want off of an album. We obviously have this example in a station giving spins to "Hole." Record labels release singles that they want played because they think they are strong songs that will help propel album sales. They release the same single to radio because they want a concentrated and consistent effort across the country. If a radio station likes a song off of an album, they will play it.
I'll give you an example that will please Penny:
My station, KSTZ/Star 102.5 in Des Moines is a Hot AC station. One of our core artists is Matchbox Twenty/Rob Thomas. His solo CD had a song "Problem Girl." The song was never released as a single, yet we still played it and got great listener reaction from it. We ended up being one of the top stations, if not the leading station in the nation on that song. We were spinning the song at least 35 times a week at one point. Also, Star played Matchbox Twenty's "Bright Lights" months before it was released as a single.
So you see, the big, bad record labels don't have total control over what is played on radio. Once a record has been released, every song is fair game. Every song.
So, what can you do?
Well, if you want a song to be considered, you can call or write an email to the station's program director and/or music director. Don't bombard them, one call/email will do. AGAIN, DO NOT BOMBARD THEM WITH EMAILS/CALLS. Also, don't try to get all your friends to do it too. Think professional when you do this. Let them know that it's documented that RCA is no longer supporting "My December" and you would still love to hear "new" Kelly Clarkson music on THEIR station. Give them ONE song to consider. AGAIN - - ONE SONG. Don't list all of your favorite songs or TELL them that they're stupid for not playing certain songs or that they're losing listeners for not playing new Kelly songs. Think of yourself as a representative and advocate FOR Kelly. Be PROFESSIONAL if you decide to do this. Make sure to either send them an mp3 or give them a place that they can listen to the song online (Don't give them iTunes. Make this as easy as possible on them. Radio people want EASY).
It's these grassroots ideas that have worked in the past for other artists. As long as you're professional about it, you'll be taken seriously.

Your station is probably not a clear channel owned station. From what I've been told over the years, is what you're stating above can definately work, if the station is an independent station. Clear channel owns quite a few radio stations. Kiis FM in L.A. is one. It's these stations that I feel played the political game that killed MD on radio. Calling, requesting, etc......I truly feel we would be wasting our time. Clear channel is done with MD. If your local station is not a clear channel owned station...go for it....but as always, and stated above don't ever bombard them....or you will lose everything you're trying to accomplish.
Totally true. CC stations are having no problem playing Breakaway songs, but you're right... they aren't touching any MD material. 99.5 times out of 100 if anyone is hearing any song off of MD on the radio it's a CBS station or something similar to that. I occasionally check out yes.com to see what's been played and the rare instance that an MD song is listed.... it ain't on a CC station. It really sucks that CC owns a majority of the stations around the country.
